Gravity Rules

Podcast André Kuipers

Stream Gravity Rules

Together with Lex Bohlmeijer (Radio 4 / De Correspondent) Nynke interviews twelve scientists, philosophers and performing artists who inspire me.

Lex and Nynke are having a conversation with astronaut and doctor André Kuipers in nature reserve Het Twiske, just above Amsterdam. He talks about inspiring developments in technology, hopeful encounters with young people and missing nature when your environment consists of plastic, metal and noisy machines. His Russian colleague sent him a file with bird sounds. André Kuipers has escaped gravity twice. The extraordinary view of the Earth gave him intense feelings: "Then I felt very strongly: if we screw up down there, we have nowhere to go."

About André Kuipers
André Kuipers is an astronaut, physician and ambassador for organizations dedicated to biodiversity and sustainability (including WWF and Justdiggit). Nynke is curious about his mission on Earth. He has looked at the planet from a distance and seen how fragile our life is here. What has that done to him? How does he now view space travel, since it brings us a lot of new knowledge, and at the same time pollutes and depletes our planet? Is there a future in growing cauliflowers on Mars?
